Wow even I hate Verizon and I don't even live in the US. I am glad I live in Europe buy any phone unlocked. Bring it any carrier and it will work.
I hope this is eventually fixed between Verizon and MS and they play nice we can hope, seems even MS and Google are starting to play nice who
would have thought.

Well "fellow Verizon PO'd users" like me - AFTER watching Paul Thurrott, who I have a TON of respect for as a "tell it like it is tech journalist" - start at about 41:50 and LISTEN to what Paul says ...

That breaks my heart but I'm glad I can afford to wait and see what unfolds. I don't blame Microsoft for sticking with the support of ATT. They haven't been perfect but anyone from the outside can see they've been the most supportive.

Here's what I don't understand. I'm fine with them saying screw Verizon. You don't have to sell thru them, but keep the firmware unlocked so that fans can still purchase at their own risk direct from MS. Customers just rely on MS to provide the updates direct :)

I am also not in the USA, and if I could think of something to do with my 1520 I would also pre order a 950XL just to **** off US carriers

Me to at least that way the people who want and have no other choice that have to Verizon can still use it.

it has been said many times in this thread - it is not free for MS to support the VZ CDMA network and they would not serve their customers by licensing bands the bulk do not need

Sometimes its not that simple. The company with the largest customer base can successfully divert blame for a problem to the other party, truth be dammed. If the phones for any reason (including Verizon caused) don't work it can cause or allow misguided customers to blame the other party. Since there are more of them (Verizon customers vs Lumia 950 customers) they win the word of mouth war. A perfect example is Apple and virtually every car maker. There are more iPhones than almost every model car owned by iPhone users. Windows phones have been able to read texts and let you dictate responses to texts all over the car's speakers and microphone in any car with bluetooth. iPhones can't despite it being trivial to do. But iPhone users are universally convinced its the fault of the car makers. Check car forums and you'll find people swearing they won't buy this or that brand car again because the car maker is preventing them from getting their texts in the car. Now MS is already in the wrong side of that situation with the 950s and Verizon but it would be even worse if MS even hinted that it could work.

Also, you have problems with coverage? Can't understand that. Most developed country, have highest internet speeds and you have coverage problems? Lol
Sorry, that sounds funny, I only have problems in deepest of the woods.

Maybe try to remember that Texas alone is about the size of France, and there are a lot of places between the coasts that are basically "the deepest of woods" . Europe fits within the USA with plenty of room to spare.

I'm in the Boston area and spend lots of time in the woods. There are places within 1 hr of the city with one or no carrier signals. AT&T had a bunk signal in the TD Garden where Bruins and Celtics play up until a couple of years ago. Did Verizon pay to have the only signal inside?

As we continue our conversation, this thread has grown so large that I thought it would be good to reflect on the "amazing feature set" in the Lumia 950XL ... and WHY exactly we are now into over 35,000 views in Day 6! It is NOT about the "carrier ANY MORE" It's about "our freedom to demand and expect our carriers to offer us a choice of what we want"! I am "still hoping" that either Apple or Google "leads" with an "independent" route like an MVNO - or - something more exotic like "white space spectrum", Facebook's solar powered aircraft, Google's project Loon balloons, etc.

Microsoft HAS TAKEN the first step with "Microsoft store 950XL UNLOCKED, dual sim models" and apparent "Microsoft control" over the Windows 10 Mobile update process!

Buy Microsoft Lumia 950 XL ? Unlocked - Microsoft Store

Why don't you Verizon prisoners emigrate to Europe to get free to choose any GSM provider you want and pay for almost anything else much more? There is freedom on this planet, for example instead of paying $649 for a 950XL you have the freedom to pay 699.99 Euros for the same thing :)

Microsoft admits that other U.S. carriers besides AT&T wanted the new Lumia models

This article makes sense, but is sad.

It's too bad individuals cant buy the firmware unlock. Would make life easier.

Here's my issue with that article. It conveniently leaves out carrier responsibility. Like how Verizon took forever to update the Icon, when they finally did they removed double-tap-to-wake, and THEN they just flat out discontinued it. The Lumia 640/640XL, both phones a great value for the price. Where are they from T-Mobile? They aren't even listed on their website, and yet they did officially come out with at least the 640. You can even get the covers still on their website. Anyone remember the Lumia 521, the customized 520 for no reason that was also discontinued? T-Mobile was probably the quickest to orphan support for their Windows Phones over the last few years. Neither carrier really cares about Windows Phone. Sure AT&T hasn't been perfect, but they are definitely in the lead when it comes to supporting Windows Phone. So yeah it makes sense for MS to keep a narrow focus while still giving us a decent amount of choice (unlocked).

OK, hot off the press. This is the conversation I just had with Microsoft Online Representative. Take it for what it's worth but at least the bottom feeder believes the 950 XL will work on Verizon if you buy unlocked, move your Verizon SIM card to the 950 XL. You will note I specifically asked for a Yes or No answer. With this a $5 you can buy a cup of Starbucks coffee.

You can answer truthfully a question regarding the new 950 XL. I am presently using the ICON on Verizon. The SIM card for the ICON and the 950 XL are the same size. Once the 950 XL is offered for online ordering, can I take the SIM card from my ICON and put it into the 950 XL and have it work on the Verizon Network?

Here is the total communication I just had online with a Representative from the Microsoft Store. Take it with a grain of salt but I was able to get a one word answer.
