Hello everyone, I am a new user of the Nokia Lumia 1020 (bought it on Ebay from a seller in Hong Kong) and I love everything about the phone except for one thing; the camera makes noise. Whenever I use the camera, it creates a fan like, hiss noise that's only audible if you bring the camera to your ears. The noise doesn't bother me when taking pictures, but it is an issue when recording video. When recording video, the microphone picks up the sound created from the camera and completely drowns out the audio making it unbearable. If I recorded a video and played it, all you would hear is, "HISSSSSSSSS" or "SHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

I love the phone, love the camera, but the camera noise and not being able to record videos is a major letdown. I've read a lot around these forums and other places on the net about people having the same issues with the 1020's camera making noise and people have said it's because of the OIS of the camera. This may be true, but this is unacceptable if the noise is picked up through the microphones when recording video.

Does anybody know what I can do to fix this? Is there a problem with the camera module and maybe that needs replacing? Or is there a problem with the microphones? I have a feeling it's because of the camera module and replacements cost around $50 on Ebay.

I would agree with you in the faulty module front. OIS does vibrate the camera lens and could cause in theory be heard but it should be virtually silent if it's all working fine. Perhaps some dust/grit has got in and it causes some louder noise.

I would take this problem up with the seller on Ebay, it shouldn't really do this. Try and get a refund if the problem wasn't listed.

Yeah see dealing with sellers in China is a PITA. If I ask them for a refund, they're gonna ask me to return the phone first which will cost a lot money to ship from Canada to China, so it's really not worth it.

I want to clarify that the noise isn't the camera screech issue a lot of other people have had, but it's probably due to the same cause.

What you are describing is a physical/hardware problem, sometimes causes by humidity and small water drops inside the phone which creates a faulty connection or a bridge in parts that shouldn't be connected.
