I finally got my Lumia 925 to update after trying 5 times and getting the 80188308 error. Here's what I did:

1. Backed up my texts and settings, copied pictures and music to my PC via usb.
2. Used Nokia Recovery Tool to downgrade to 8.0
3. Downloaded Preview for Developers app then upgraded to 8.1
4. Tried 8.1 Update 1 again...and SUCCESS 1ST ATTEMPT! :smile:
5. Hard reset phone and restored backup, copied pictures and music back to phone from PC. :grin:

Not sure if this will work for anyone else but if it does, great! Good luck everyone!

No mate Cyan is firmware embedded on device no matter how hard resets do or recover with the toolkit you'll always have it

I'm not having any problems but want to start clean before I install a SD card for the first time.

Would it be any problem to do a hard reset at this point? I'm on a Lumia 1520.3 with Cyan and the latest DP upate.

I was having trouble with this on my Lumia 920, but downloading a new language pack fixed it for me. Third time's the charm.

I managed to update/solve the 80188308 error for my Samsung Ativ S :

I made a backup
Settings -> info -> reset
Didn't restore backup after restart
Install Preview for Developer
Update
Settings -> info -> reset
Restore backup after restart

So I was having trouble and I went back to windows 8 and started again after the language thong did not work for me, funny thing was after it installed 8.1 with cyan the OS was a different number to what I had before a 1293 I think instead of the 1297 on dp and now I have just installed the update no problem.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the failing backups people have been getting, i have not been able to back up since installing 8.1 dp, i just tried again and it fails after 99% ?? just a thought is all

Microsoft, the problem could be when I download the update it brings down 2 updates at the same time, the pre requisite and update 1 and tries to load both. I think this could be your problem. please fix

I backup my lumia but couldn't restore it downgrading from 8.1 to 8.0
